NTSB: No evidence of mechanical failure in 2018 crash near Healy - KTUU.com

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - A new report from the National Transportation Safety Board found no evidence of mechanical failure in a September 2018 plane crash that killed two sheep hunters in the mountains of the Alaska Range.

The NTSB Factual report released Monday described a fire that burned much of the fuselage, including damaging the onboard GPS severely enough that the data couldn’t be recovered.

The crash killed two people: Timothy Sonnenberg, 45, and Jason Roberts, 43, who had been reported overdue after they left for a planned sheep hunt on Sept. 15.

After a search party was organized, the plane was discovered by a pilot who spotted the burned wreckage in a remote mountain valley at an elevation of about 4,300 feet on Sept. 22. It was identified as the plane the next day.

Medical examiners determined that the passenger and pilot had died of “multiple blunt force injuries,” presumably from the impact of the crash and not from the post-crash fire. A toxicology report found no drugs or alcohol.

The pilot of the plane had a total of about 128.8 hours of air time and 77.5 hours as pilot in command.

According to the report, no flight plan was filed prior to the plane’s departure on Sept. 15. A section of the FAA’s Aeronautical Information Manual that is quoted in the report: “A filed flight plan is the most timely and effective indicator that an aircraft is overdue” and that “Search efforts are often wasted, and rescue is often delayed” when pilots fail to file flight plans.

The factual report doesn’t contain any inferences about a probable cause. That information will be published in a final report.
